What a check-up involves
A dental check-up is a thorough evaluation of your teeth, periodontal health, occlusion (bite) and oral soft tissues, followed by a collaborative discussion regarding our clinical findings. The primary focus of this appointment is diagnostic assessment rather than active treatment.
Your first appointment lasts approximately an hour and covers an examination of your teeth, gums and bite, any imaging required, a 3D digital scan and a bespoke treatment plan including treatment costs and an appointment layout.
Once you are registered with the practice, subsequent routine examinations are streamlined. Because we retain your medical history, diagnostic imagery and previous periodontal data, our role is to monitor changes and cross reference your current status with your clinical history.
How often should you come?
Rather than relying on a generic calendar schedule, your dentist customises your examination interval based entirely on your individual oral health. In line with official national clinical guidance, recall frequencies are determined by your personal risk factors, which is why we do not automatically book every patient for twice yearly visits out of habit.
If your teeth and periodontal health are completely stable, your recall interval will be appropriately extended. Conversely, if a specific area requires ongoing clinical monitoring, your interval will be shorter. In these instances, we will always explain exactly what we are observing and the reasoning behind our recommendation.
Three months to two years, depending on you
National guidance sets recall intervals by individual risk rather than by a default six months, so your dentist will tell you which applies to you and why.
What happens if you leave it
The reality of oral health is that most dental problems are completely painless in their early stages. Decay does not hurt until it reaches the deep nerve of the tooth. Gum disease rarely causes discomfort until the bone is affected and teeth begin to loosen. Similarly, a hidden crack in a filled tooth gives absolutely no warning until the day the tooth splits.
This is exactly why regular check-ups are so vital. When caught early, a small area of decay can be resolved with a simple, routine filling. Left unmonitored, that same tooth can eventually require complex root canal treatment, a crown, or even an extraction. The difference between these two outcomes is simply a matter of time, and thousands of pounds in avoidable treatment costs.

Questions we are often asked
If you have any questions about cost, please ask. We would far rather answer a question about price on the phone than have you wondering about it.
How much is a dental check-up?
From £85 for registered patients. A first visit as a new patient is approximately an hour and starts from £150, including x-rays where they are needed. Check-ups are included on every tier of the QueensWood Plan.
How long does it take?
A first appointment runs to approximately an hour, because there is no history to work from. Once you are registered, a routine check-up is a shorter appointment.
Do I need x-rays every time?
No. Radiographs are prescribed on your own clinical need, your dental history and your risk factors, rather than to a fixed routine. In practice that means an interval of somewhere between six and twenty four months for most people, and your dentist will tell you which applies to you and why.
I have not been for years.
Many of our patients had not seen a dentist in years before they came to us. You are very welcome, and you will not be the first.
Do you see children?
We are an adult only practice, so we do not treat children. If you are looking for a dentist for a child, do ring us and we will gladly point you towards a practice nearby that takes them.
Is it included in the plan?
Yes. Check-ups are included on every tier of the QueensWood Plan, alongside hygiene appointments and routine x-rays.
